Journalists have a significant influence on how electoral narratives are shaped and perceived by the public. The stories they choose to tell, the way they frame issues, and the facts they highlight can all impact voter opinions and behaviors. In an age where misinformation and disinformation can easily influence public opinion and electoral outcomes, the role of journalists as gatekeepers of truth is more critical than ever.
Recently Mobile Web Ghana-American Corner, Agbogba buzzed with energy and purpose as it hosted the alumni of the Mobile Web Ghana and the US Embassy Ghana’s Youth Media Literacy project. Joining them were members of the University of Media Arts and Communication’s (UniMAC) Media Literacy Club. Together, they engaged in a pivotal discussion on “Media Gatekeeping: Examining the Influential Role of Journalism in Shaping Electoral Narratives.
Leading the session was Nehemiah Attugah, a seasoned expert in media literacy and journalism. His focus was clear: to equip these budding journalists with the tools they need to combat misinformation and uphold ethical standards in their reporting. Attendees were taught essential fact-checking skills, a fundamental defense against the pervasive spread of false information.
These future media leaders left the session with a reinforced commitment to ensuring that accurate information reaches the public. By fostering a culture of thorough fact-checking and ethical reporting, they are poised to play a significant role in shaping a media landscape where misinformation has no place.
