Math is often viewed as a challenging subject, but when approached with confidence and creativity, it can open doors to endless opportunities. Research indicates that girls often shy away from math due to societal stereotypes and lack of role models. The Crowning the Math Queen competition hosted as part of the American Corner, Agbogba’s ( Mobile Web Ghana- U.S Embassy Ghana) flagship STEM Series, was a thrilling event designed to inspire young girls to embrace mathematics and explore its real-world applications. This engaging session also sought to commemorate National STEM Day, a day dedicated to celebrating the contributions and advancements in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Eight talented Junior High School (JHS) girls from various schools participated in exciting rounds such as the Math Catwalk, Math Talent Show, Mathematical Knowledge Quiz, and Creative Presentation: Math in the Real World. These activities tested not only their math knowledge but also their ability to connect mathematical concepts to real-world scenarios.
Winners
The Math Catwalk: Where Fashion Meets Function: Contestants strut their stuff in the Math Catwalk, creatively incorporating mathematical concepts into their outfits, showing that math can be stylish and fun.
The Math Talent Show: Showcasing Creativity and Knowledge: Young girls displayed their unique mathematical abilities in the Math Talent Show, using performances to demonstrate how math can be both entertaining and educational.
Creative Presentation: Math in the Real World”
Contestants took on the challenge of connecting mathematical concepts to real-world applications, proving how math shapes the world around us and impacts daily life
After an exciting and intense competition, the winners were announced:
- Math Queen: Princess Sarah Baba Adam from New Legon AdMA Model JHS,award presented by Madam Florence Toffa- Director of Mobile Web Ghana
- 1st Runner Up: Diamond Kish from Ancilla Primary and Junior High School, award presented by Dr. Gloria Agyeiwaa Antwi Botchway: Lecturer at the University of Ghana and the first female to earn a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the university.
- 2nd Runner Up: Queen Naa Odoley Sowah from Hallmark International School, award presented by current Top Model of Universe Ghana,
The winners showcased exceptional math skills, creativity, and presentation abilities, impressing both the judges and the audience. Their performances highlighted the importance of encouraging young girls to pursue their passions and excel in mathematics.
Judges Panel
Our Judges Panel was honored by the following amazing women:
- Dr. Gloria Agyeiwaa Antwi Botchway: Lecturer at the University of Ghana and the first female to earn a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the university. She advocates for young women in STEM through the M-in-the-STEM Project.
- Queen Faustina Adu-Tabi: Final-year student at the University of Ghana, current Top Model of Universe Ghana, and mental health and women’s rights advocate.
- Christina Obuoba: Co-founder of SEED Afrique, an organization dedicated to empowering the youth through STEM and Sports education

As Princess Sarah Baba Adam takes on the title of Math Queen,2024, we are excited to see the positive impact she will make in her school and community. We believe that her passion for math will inspire her peers, especially young girls, to view mathematics not just as a subject but as a gateway to endless opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics fields.
